DIVERSITY IN THE KNITTING COMMUNITY
We are quite new and have a small voice, nonetheless, we want to add our voice to those calling for inclusivity. In our short time launching Mother Knitter, we have been reading and listening to messages on social media and have been working on crafting just the right message so that we don’t do damage to those we want to uplift.
Before we go any further we want to make one thing very clear, in no uncertain terms: There is no room, ever, for anyone of any color, race, faith, status, size, sexual orientation, life choice or gender to feel marginalized in our space. Period.
We will continue to listen and do the work that needs to be done to help those who need and want it. Are you a designer, sample knitter, model? We have several initiatives underway and if you want to collaborate, we want to hear from you.
We will continue to update this policy and our message, but after given how divisive the words and actions of those in power has become, we feel that we’re at a critical point in history and it’s important that we take a stand and not accept this as the new “normal.”
A word on brand: we represent a Norwegian company. The images used in their catalogs (to date) represent their indigenous Scandinavian heritage but that does not mean that they are blind to or ignoring the conversation taking place in the knitting community. We are working actively with them to include more diverse designers and models. Being in Scandinavia, this has been more challenging than it will be in the US, and we welcome any and all support from our diverse crochet and knitting community. We are happy to have you submit your designs to us/them for consideration.
We are not perfect, but we will strive to be the change we want to see in the world.
