Knitted hats tend to stretch out and no one likes a hat that falls off one’s head or doesn’t stay in place. There are several reasons why a knitted hat doesn’t hold its shape but the material is a big factor. Sheep’s wool (particularly merino) is elastic and tends to hold its shape well, but for example silk mohair and alpaca are more prone to stretch with time. Thus, when deciding how many stitches to cast on, always keep in mind the characteristics of your fibre of choice.

During the past few weeks, we’ve been knitting a high pile of these hats, in every colour of the rainbow (and beyond). The fabric is not only firm enough for a good, long-lasting accessory, but it also has another great feature: it doesn’t itch at all!
